SEPTEMBER 2000 This is a piece I contributed to the Percussion Ensemble installment of the aforementioned Austin composer series, for vibraphone and marimba. It was not only another lesson in music composition and time management, but a lesson in communication. There are so many subtle and drastic potential differences between the written and the played piece, I was amazed at how much there is to consider. I had written the piece on my synthesizer at home - not realizing the tempo was virtually unplayable - and had to alter it significantly once rehearsals began. Once again however, I was grateful for these musicians' endless reserves of dedication and insight, in helping me shape this thing for the performance. |
